Joint Media Release
All talk and no action after another embarrassing High Court loss

The Minister for Home Affairs confirmed in Question Time today that all 215 of the dangerous non-citizen offenders released on the Albanese Labor government’s watch are now free in the Australian community without any monitoring or curfews after their embarrassing loss in the High Court yesterday.

This cohort includes 12 murderers, 66 sex offenders, 97 people convicted of assault, 15 domestic violence perpetrators and others who will be free in the community without any monitoring or curfews. 65 of these former detainees have been charged with new offences at the state and territory level since their release.

This is a mess of the government’s own making. Despite introducing new regulations and proposing new legislation, the Albanese government has failed to re-apply any curfews or electronic monitoring today.

When will Tony Burke use his new powers to apply the ankle bracelets and curfews to these dangerous criminals? What assurances can he give the victims of these offenders and the community that their safety is not at risk in the meantime?

Every second counts when it comes to community safety, and the government cannot afford to sit on its hands while these offenders roam free – particularly after revelations earlier this week that the government has still not used the preventative detention powers the parliament rushed through almost 12 months ago to re-detain any high-risk offenders.

The Coalition has today written to the government to seek a parliamentary inquiry into the proposed legislation so that it can be scrutinised before it is legislated in the final sitting fortnight of the year. We will work constructively in the national interest to help clean up Labor’s mess and keep the community safe.
